Emma Roberts: what aunt Julia taught me
After a troubled childhood, Julia Roberts’s niece found tween stardom. But now is the time to start getting serious
Kevin Maher Recommend? Emma Roberts is not a fan of nudity. Not her own, anyway. “I would show my back and my butt on camera, but I would never go topless,” says the 19-year-old actress, tween icon and Hollywood heiress (her aunt is Julia Roberts, her father Eric Roberts). “Going topless is so tasteless, and I prefer to leave all that stuff to people’s imagination,” she pronounces wisely, from a secluded restaurant booth in an even more secluded West End hotel. She is kohl-eyed, with dirty blonde and bedraggled hair, and sports a gold Marc Jacobs safety-pin earring, a graffiti-style sleeveless Tibi top and the mock dishevelled mien of a “sk8ter-girl” supermodel. She is tiny. Kylie tiny. And though she has the frame of a sparrow, she has the handshake of a builder.

“But you never know what might happen,” she continues, offering a sudden rethink on screen nakedness. “This is what I’m saying now, but in five years’ time it could be totally different.”

This is the archetypal Emma Roberts moment. To say that she is in transition is an understatement. Thanks to an early back-story in kids’ TV and more recent film hits such as Hotel for Dogs and Nancy Drew, the actress commands legions of screaming pre-adolescent fans and shares cover space on girlie fanzines with dreamy pin-ups such as Zac Efron, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson. And yet, she says, as she moves towards her twenties, she is inevitably “veering towards older things”. Thus, off-screen, she struggles with her squeaky Disney-clean image and with the pressure to maintain the integrity of, well, her brand. She drinks wine while in London, but is worried about how it will be reported back home. “You feel very adult, sitting in London with a glass of wine, but because you’re not allowed to do it in LA, it is seen as bad.” Similarly, she was photographed recently with a cigarette hanging from her lips, which caused much hysteria among US moral guardians and fansites alike — “Celebrities smoking is always bad,” read one online commentary, “but it’s especially disappointing when the celebrity is a teenager. And even worse when that teenager is Emma Roberts: there are a lot of girls out there who look up to her.” Roberts sighs. “It’s just kind of tough that I’m not allotted any room to make mistakes. I smoke occasionally. But because it’s me, it’s like, ‘Oh my God! You’re a terrible influence’.”

Equally, on screen, Roberts is quietly tearing up the rulebook on what is expected of an actress who is used to smiling a lot and chewing clunker lines, such as this one from Hotel for Dogs: “We’re going to be in more trouble than we’ve ever been in, but we’re going to save the dogs!”

In the space of two new movies she has redefined her persona entirely for an audience that, hitherto, might have been unaware of her existence. In 4.3.2.1, a blokey UK crime caper movie from the hyperactive mind of Noel Clarke (Adulthood), she stars as one of four feisty female protagonists in a film that includes a fractured narrative, a diamond heist macguffin and enough leering lesbian sex scenes, crotch shots, drug-taking and gun play to satisfy the most jaded male viewer. “I think it’ll play well to some of my, er, older teen audience,” she says, hopefully.

Lymelife, on the other hand, is equally adult in subject matter, but for all the right reasons. It charts the painful disintegration of two neighbouring families in the stultifying world of early-Eighties Long Island. Alec Baldwin and Cynthia Nixon effortlessly lead the peripheral adult cast, while Roberts and Rory Culkin (younger brother of Macaulay) take centre stage as protagonists Adrianna and Scott, two friends on the cusp of a faltering romance. Elsewhere, the movie is haunted by the shadows of Eighties “greed is good” capitalism, the Falklands conflict and a localised Lyme’s disease epidemic that has turned Adrianna’s father, Charlie (Timothy Hutton, mesmerising), into a wreck. Yet it is undeniably the strength of Roberts and Culkin on screen, and their bristling deadpan performances, that hold the film together. Roberts, as the coquettish Adrianna, is the revelation here. She can leap from screwball to droll to quietly hysterical in a single scene. She relishes, it seems, bashing out show-stopping lines such as, “My mother’s a big, fat, slutty f***ing whore!” But Nancy Drew aficionados will be sorely tested by the sight of her first screen sex scene.

“Actually, in the script, it doesn’t even go that far,” she says of a sequence that is nonetheless tastefully shot from above the waist. “But on the day, Derick [Martini, the writer-director] just said, ‘You guys go as far as you want to, and you can basically call cut!’ So me and Rory made everyone get out, and talked, and figured out how far we’d be comfortable taking it. But the way it was edited made it look like we were really, like really, doing it. Watching it with my mom and best friend was mortifying.”

Roberts, here, is at pains to add that, as in life, she is not “trying” to be provocative. “It’s not like I’m going from Hotel for Dogs straight into playing a stripper or a drug addict,” she says. Instead, she adds, she’s simply trying to have a career. She points to actresses such as Anne Hathaway and Gwyneth Paltrow as role models. And, naturally, while she’s on the subject, the conversation inevitably leads back to the woman she politely describes as, “my Aunt Julia”. It’s difficult terrain for Roberts. She has tried to avoid it in the past, partially because she could be accused of riding the coat-tails of her aunt’s success, but also because this subject winds itself backwards into real-life family history. The stuff that rarely makes it into teen magazines.

Her father, Eric, for instance, was a renowned hellraiser when he was arrested for cocaine possession in 1987. He split from his long-term girlfriend and Emma Roberts’s mother, Kelly Cunningham, before Roberts was a year old, and lost custody of her. He would later be arrested, in 1995, for pushing his wife, Eliza Garrett, against a wall, and would become a media whipping boy and appear as an emblem of washed-up celebrity in everything from South Park to Seinfeld. Emma, meanwhile, was raised alone by her mother, and by a strong cross-familial matriarchy that included, remarkably, Eric’s own sisters, Lisa and Julia (Eric would later confess that a longstanding feud with sister Julia, now over, was born out of this ostensible betrayal). Emma’s first experiences of the movie business would be as a six-year-old child, on set with Aunt Julia “and thinking that it was really cool to be away from home and staying in a hotel”.

When I start to mention her father, Roberts cuts me off. “I don’t really read any of the stuff that’s written about that,” she says, wincing and toying with an empty water glass. “At all. It was a long time ago.” Was she aware of it happening around her though? “I still don’t even know half the stuff that went on, so I’m guessing that I was well protected from it. And by the time I was old enough to be aware of it, it was over. Which I think was good for everyone.” Does she ever talk to her father about those times? “I follow my dad on Twitter,” she says. “That’s all I have to say about that.”

She adds that, anyway, her definition of “family” is not traditional. “You choose the people in life who you want to become your main focus. You surround yourself with people you love and who love you, and that, to me, is family.” Her loved ones include her film-producer mother, her nine-year-old stepsister, Grace, and a plethora of friends who have been with her since childhood. And there’s Aunt Julia. She has recently returned from quality time with the latter and her three young cousins in Malibu. She says that she admires her aunt’s career immensely, though her own leanings are less mainstream, and she can’t wait to see Julia in an adaptation of Elizabeth Gilbert’s novel of self-discovery Eat, Pray, Love. I ask her if she’s had therapy. “No comment,” she says, smiling. Is it the done thing for girls your age to go to therapy? “No comment,” still smiling. So if, say, a therapist walked into the room now ... “No comment!”

She will say, however, that the acting life can be lonely. Aged 9, as a kids’ TV addict, she persuaded her mother to allow her to attend her first audition — for the Johnny Depp cocaine movie Blow. She got the part, as Depp’s daughter, and hasn’t stopped working since. There’s been a TV series, Unfabulous, a spin-off album and a series of perky movies, including Aquamarine, Spymate and Wild Child. All of which have played havoc with her love life. “It sounds so weird to say this, but it’s so hard to date people the way you’d normally date,” she says. “You don’t meet people in conventional ways, like in clubs. Then you meet them on movie sets and that doesn’t work out. So the question becomes not, ‘How long is this relationship going to last?’ but, ‘How am I going to meet people in the first place?’ That’s the weird bit.”

Her last big relationship, she confesses, was with her Wild Child co-star and British- born beauty, Alex Pettyfer. Why did it end? “You know,” she says, shrugging. “Sometimes things just don’t work out. Maybe in ten years’ time it’ll work out. Or maybe it was just what it was and ran its course. That’s life, I guess.”

She says that she is resigned, for the moment, to being on her own, and to focusing on a career that includes forthcoming movies such as the Joel Schumacher thriller Twelve and the new drama from the Milk Oscar-winner Dustin Lance Black, What’s Wrong with Virginia. (“It’s totally crazy. I play a Mormon.”) Plus she’ll be a self-harming teenager in It’s Kind of a Funny Story, the new movie from the team behind Half Nelson (“I play a cutter! I have cuts on my face. That’s a fun thing to play.”) She says that she has her own writing ambitions, and that though she was accepted into the highly regarded Sarah Lawrence College in New York recently, she’s not sure if long-term study is a viable option at the moment (“I might take short- story writing and psychology for a semester”). In the meantime, she says, she’s getting to grips with life around her, and the reality of being an actress, and a person, in transition.

“Sometimes I’ll be walking around London thinking, ‘This is so weird’,” she says. “You leave somewhere, you come back, and you find yourself sitting in the exact same place, the exact same spot. And that’s when you realise it,” she adds, reaching for the words that only a true 19-year-old on the cusp of megastardom could comprehend. “Everything is the same. And yet everything is different.”

Major anniversaries of natural disasters are usually times to reflect with awe on the forces the planet can unleash — and to acknowledge the human suffering that too often results. The fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina's assault on the Gulf Coast, coming up at the end of August, will almost certainly serve as a prime example.

But the coastal states may not have the luxury of looking back at 2005. If a growing number of forecasts are correct, the hurricane season of 2010 could be a monster — one that will have the eastern states from the Gulf of Mexico to New England fearfully watching the sea all summer.

As recently as a few months ago, storm experts were predicting an average hurricane season this year, or maybe one even a little below average. In a typical year, the Atlantic brews up about six hurricanes. Last year, there were a paltry three. Just in the past week, however, hurricane watchers at universities and private forecasting companies have started to talk about numbers more like seven or eight. On Tuesday Britain's official weather service — its venerable Met Office — joined the consensus. On Thursday, the U.S. will weigh in, as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) presents its own outlook, and nobody expects it to be any more favorable.

"The 2010 hurricane season is not looking good," says Greg Holland, director of the Earth System Laboratory at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo. This year is a lot like 2005, the worst hurricane system on record, he says. "Overall conditions are very similar, with one important difference: they are actually a bit worse."

The conditions Holland and the others are talking about have mostly to do with the temperature of the ocean. In the eastern Atlantic, the normal spawning grounds of hurricanes that threaten the U.S. and the Caribbean, the waters are the warmest they've been in 50 years — and all other things being equal, warmer surface temperatures mean more, and more powerful, hurricanes.

All other things are not equal, though, and in this case, that's not a good thing. For the past year or so, ocean temperatures in the Eastern Pacific have been elevated thanks to one of the periodic El Niño events that shows up every few years. When El Niño is in full force, it also alters wind patterns halfway around the world, creating something called vertical wind shear — winds blowing at different strengths or directions at different altitudes. That tends to rip hurricanes apart before they can get themselves organized.

The latest El Niño warming is waning faster than expected. That won't do much to help the oceans cool before the hurricane season starts on June 1, but it does eliminate the wind shear that could disrupt the storms. Putting those factors together doesn't guarantee a bad season, but it's about as close as you can get in the uncertain science of long-range forecasting. Still, there are plenty of things about which forecasters won't even hazard a guess. "We don't know exactly how many storms," says Holland, "and we don't know where they will hit." You could have 10 or even 20 major hurricanes, and if they all stay away from land, the damage to life and property could be minimal.

But it would be very foolish to bet on nature's being that kind. "We have an enormous number of vulnerable people, plus commerce, industry and everything else along the Gulf and up the east coast," says Holland, "and more and more people are moving in all the time." Even without the certainty that a major hurricane will strike this year, he says, "we have to be ready for a high level of risk for the entire season."

London, England (CNN) -- The Icelandic volcano that has been disrupting thousands of flights with its ash plume has significantly reduced in activity, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office.

No ash was detected from the Eyjafjallajokul volcano on Sunday in a flight over the crater by Icelandic scientists.

Jonsson Thorsteinn, an Icelandic Met Office forecaster, told CNN: "The volcano appears to be dormant, the activity has been going down for the last two days and at the moment there is nothing coming out... no magma."

Measurements with a heat camera from the test flight indicated that the temperature at the crater was just under 100°C, confirming that the volcano was now spouting steam instead of ash, Thorsteinn said.

Steinunn Jakobsdottir, a geophysicist with the Icelandic Met Office, told CNN: "Seismic activity is down, there is still some background rumbling but it is much calmer."

Jakobsdottir said the Sunday test flight data found that the "volcanic tremor is still decreasing and is approaching the level it had before the eruption."

However, scientists warn that the volcano could erupt again and that it was impossible to predict when.

"There is still something going on inside, some tremors, it is possible it could erupt again, but when is a question nobody can answer," said Jonsson Thorsteinn.

The slow down in volcanic activity is good news for commercial airlines and millions of passengers planning to fly in the near future.

The volcano beneath the Eyjafjallajokull glacier in southern Iceland erupted in mid-April, sending a dense cloud of ash into the atmosphere, disrupting international travel for several days.

Volcanic ash can be a serious hazard to aircraft, reducing visibility, damaging flight controls and ultimately causing jet engines to fail.

(CNN) -- North Korea accused the South Korean navy of trespassing into its waters Tuesday and threatened to retaliate with military action, the Yonhap news agency said.

Tensions are high between the two neighbors since an official South Korean report which blamed the Communist North of firing a torpedo at a navy ship, killing 46 sailors.

A North Korean military official accused the South of intruding into North Korean waters in the Yellow Sea from May 14 to 24, the news agency reported.

"This is a deliberate provocation aimed to spark off another military conflict in the West Sea of Korea and thus push to a war phase the present north-south relations," the official said in a statement, according to Yonhap.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged North Korea Monday to reveal what it knows about the "act of aggression" that sunk a South Korean warship.

She also said the United States' "support for South Korea's defense is unequivocal" and that North Korea should "stop its belligerence and threatening behavior."

"We endorse President Lee's call on North Korea to come forward with the facts regarding this act of aggression and, above all, stop its belligerence and threatening behavior," Clinton said.

U.S. President Barack Obama has directed military commanders to work with South Korean troops "to ensure readiness and to deter future aggression" from North Korea.

นายนิพนธ์ นาคสมภพ นายกสมาคมโทรทัศน์ดาวเทียม (ประเทศไทย) กล่าวว่า เนื่องจากการชุมนุมและการสลายการชุมนุมของแนวร่วมประชาธิปไตยต่อต้านเผด็จการแห่งชาติ (นปช.) นั้น ได้มีสื่อต่างประเทศเข้ามาทำข่าวเป็นจำนวนมาก โดยการนำเสนอข่าวของสำนักข่าวต่างประเทศส่วนใหญ่ได้นำเสนออย่างเป็นรูปธรรม ยกเว้นแต่ สถานีโทรทัศน์ซีเอ็นเอ็น ที่มีการนำเสนอข้อมูลเพียงบางส่วน ที่อาจบิดเบือนและขัดแย้งกับเหตุการณ์ อีกทั้งยังมีรายการบางประเภทได้มีการกล่าวไปในเชิงหมิ่นสถาบันสูงสุดของไทย สมาคมฯ จึงได้เชิญผู้แทนสมาคมที่ปฏิบัติงานในวงการสื่อมวลชน ร่วมหารือกันเพื่อพิจารณามาตรการในการตอบโต้การกระทำดังกล่าว

โดยที่ประชุมในวันนี้มีมติตั้งคณะกรรมการร่วมกัน 5 คน เพื่อทำจดหมายถึงสถานีโทรทัศน์ ซีเอ็นเอ็น ตอบโต้การนำเสนอข่าวที่บิดเบือนความเป็นจริง และพร้อมประสานงานกับสมาคมนักข่าวต่างประเทศ เพื่อเชิญผู้สื่อข่าวต่างประเทศที่อยู่ในเหตุการณ์ดังกล่าวเข้าตอบข้อสงสัยการนำเสนอข่าวในพื้นที่

ขณะที่ รองศาสตราจารย์ ดร.พรจิต สมบัติพานิช คณบดีคณะวารสารศาสตร์ ให้สัมภาษณ์ถึงการนำเสนอข่าวของซีเอ็นเอ็น ต่อเหตุการณ์ว่า ปัญหาของซีเอ็นเอ็นนั้น คือ การรายงานข่าวที่บิดเบือนของสถานีโทรทัศน์ และ นายแดน ริเวอร์ส ผู้สื่อข่าวซีเอ็นเอ็นประจำประเทศไทย ที่นำเสนอข่าวในลักษณะนำเสนอข้อมูลเพียงด้านเดียว เสมือนคนอยากได้ข่าว แต่ไม่ลงพื้นที่ อาทิ การรายงานข่าวภายในคอนโดมิเนียม ซึ่งห่างจากพื้นที่การชุมนุมแล้วอ้างว่ามีชาวต่างชาติได้รับผลกระทบจากเหตุการณ์ เพราะถูกกระสุนยิงขึ้นมา เป็นต้น ทั้งนี้ ยอมรับว่า มีเพียงประชาชนกลุ่มน้อยเท่านั้นที่ทราบว่า ซีเอ็นเอ็น นำเสนอข่าวอย่างไม่ตรงตามความจริง ฉะนั้น ก็จะต้องหาวิธีในการเผยแพร่ให้ประชาชนส่วนใหญ่ได้รับทราบข้อมูลดังกล่าว โดยตนอยากให้รัฐบาลเร่งประชาสัมพันธ์เหตุการณ์ต่างๆ ให้ต่างชาติได้รับทราบข้อมูลที่แท้จริงโดยเร็ว

ทั้งนี้ ระหว่างการประชุมนั้น นายกมล ได้ตั้งข้อสังเกตว่า จริงๆ แล้ว นายแดน ได้เข้ามาทำข่าวในประเทศไทยนานแล้ว ก็น่าจะรู้ว่าเมืองไทยเป็นอย่างไรดี ซึ่งหาก นายแดน เป็นผู้สื่อข่าวต่างชาติที่เพิ่งลงเครื่องบินมาถึง 3 วัน แล้วรายงานข่าวที่ผิดพลาด ก็ยังพอให้อภัยได้ แต่ลักษณะการกระทำดังกล่าวนี้ ก็ถือว่าเป็นเรื่องที่ไม่ถูกต้อง ขณะที่ นายสมเถา กล่าวว่า ตนขอเสนอให้เชิญนายแดน มาร่วมดีเบตอธิบายถึงการนำเสนอข่าวของตนต่อเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นทั้งหมด ซึ่งประชาชนจะได้รู้ว่า นายแดน มีทัศนคติต่อการทำงานในประเทศไทยอย่างไร ด้านผู้ร่วมประชุมรายหนึ่ง กล่าวเสริมว่า กรณีที่ นายแดน นำเสนอข่าวการเสียชีวิตของ พล.ต.ขัตติยะ สวัสดิผล ผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิกองทัพบก ที่ดูเสมือนว่า นายแดน อยู่ในเหตุการณ์ด้วยนั้น จากการสอบถามผู้สื่อข่าวต่างประเทศที่อยู่ในเหตุการณ์ ยืนยันว่า นายแดน และทีมข่าวซีเอ็นเอ็น ไม่ได้อยู่ในจุดเกิดเหตุดังกล่าว จึงเป็นที่น่าสังเกตว่า ซีเอ็นเอ็น ได้ภาพดังกล่าวมาจากสำนักข่าวแห่งใด

หน้าร้อนปีนี้อุณหภูมิร้อนสุดๆ เพียงต้นเดือนเมษายนบางวันอุณหภูมิก็สูงขึ้นไปถึงกว่า 40 องศาเซลเซียส ร้อนทั้งอุณหภูมิอากาศ อุณหภูมิการเมืองและอุณหภูมิของบ้านเมือง ก็ไม่รู้ว่าความวุ่ยวายในสังคมไทยจะจบกันได้อย่างไรเพื่อให้คนไทยทุกคนมีความสุข ร้อนอย่างนี้หลายๆคนคงอยากจะไปคลายร้อนที่ชายทะเล นำความทุกข์ความเครียดไปทิ้งเทให้คลื่นทะเลพัดพาออกไป แล้วปล่อยจิตปล่อยใจให้ผ่อนคลาย เก็บรับเอาความชื่นเย็น เก็บเอาพลังจากท้องทะเลกลับมาเป็นพลังชีวิต

หาดทรายชายทะเลนับเป็นแหล่งท่องเที่ยวที่เหมาะสมกับคนทุกเพศทุกวัย ตั้งแต่เด็ก ผู้ใหญ่ ชาย หญิง ไปจนถึงผู้เฒ่าผู้แก่ โดยเฉพาะเด็กๆในช่วงปิดเทอมภาคฤดูร้อนนั้น ก่อนเปิดเทอมภาคเรียนใหม่ อย่างไรเสียก็ขอให้คุณพ่อคุณแม่พาไปเที่ยวทะเลสักครั้ง แม้นเมืองไทยของเราจะมีแหล่งท่องเที่ยวมากมายหลากหลาย แต่แหล่งท่องเที่ยวทางทะเลนั้นก็เป็นแหล่งท่องเที่ยวยอดนิยมของทั้งนักท่องเที่ยวคนไทยและนักท่องเที่ยวชาวต่างประเทศ ซึ่งมีการประมาณกันว่าแต่ละปีทะเลไทยทั้งสองฝั่งสามารถสร้างมูลค่าทางการท่องเที่ยวเป็นเงินมากมายถึงราว 5 แสนล้านบาทเลยทีเดียว

ร้อนนี้อย่าปล่อยให้ร้อนกายร้อนใจ เตรียมตัวเก็บของไปเที่ยวทะเลให้สบายใจคลายร้อนกันดีกว่า การเตรียมตัวขั้นแรกก็ต้องวางแผนการเดินทางกันก่อน เพื่อให้การท่องเที่ยวสะดวกสบายไม่มีปัญหา ทะเลไทยนั้นมีให้เลือกเที่ยวมากมายหลายจังหวัด ซึ่งพอจะแบ่งตามภูมิภาคได้ 3 ส่วนด้วยกันคือ ทะเลภาคตะวันออกที่นิยมเที่ยวกันได้ตั้งแต่บางแสน พัทยา จอมเทียน สัตหีบ ระยอง จันทบุรี ตราด เป็นทะเลที่เดินทางใกล้ๆ จากกรุงเทพฯตั้งแต่ 2-3 ชั่วโมง หรือจะเลือกทะเลทางฝั่งอ่าวไทยโดยเดินทางลงใต้ เริ่มตั้งแต่หาดเจ้าสำราญ หาดชะอำ หัวหิน อ่าวมะนาว อ่าวประจวบฯ ทะเลชุมพร ทะเลและหมู่เกาะของสุราษฎร์ธานี เช่นเกาะสมุย เกาะพะงัน เกาะเต่า ลงไปถึงหาดขนอม เขตนครศรีธรรมราช หาดสมิหรา จังหวัดสงขลา และชายหาดท้องทะเล เกาะแก่งของฝั่งทะเลอันดามันซึ่งมีภูเก็ตเป็นศูนย์กลาง ทะเลแต่ละที่ก็มีความงดงาม มีความคึกคัก หรือเงียบสงบเป็นเอกลักษณ์เฉพาะตัว มีสิ่งอำนวยความสะดวก โรงแรม ที่พัก ร้านอาหาร ที่มีความหลากหลายและแตกต่างกันออกไป ซึ่งนักท่องเที่ยวสามารถจะเลือกใช้บริการได้ตามความชื่นชอบของตน ซึ่งปัจจุบันข้อมูลข่าวสารเกี่ยวกับแหล่งท่องเที่ยว ที่พัก ร้านอาหาร ก็สามารถจะหาได้ง่าย โดยเฉพาะการเข้าไปหาข้อมูลทางอินเตอร์เน็ตจากเว็ปไซต์ต่างๆ หรือเข้าไปดูได้ที่เว็บไซต์ของการท่องเที่ยวแห่งประเทศไทยที่ www.tourismthailand.org ซึ่งมีข้อมูลแหล่งท่องเที่ยว ที่พัก ร้านอาหาร ทุกจังหวัดทั่วเมืองไทยให้ชมกัน





เมื่อวางแผนการเดินทาง ติดต่อที่พักเรียบร้อย ก็ลองมาดูการเตรียมตัวไปทะเลกัน ซึ่งการเตรียมตัวอันดับแรกก็คือ ต้องพักผ่อนให้มากๆ จะได้ท่องเที่ยวได้อย่างมีความสุขสนุกสนาน เตรียมอุปกรณ์เที่ยวทะเลให้พร้อม ตั้งแต่ชุดว่ายน้ำ ห่วงยาง ชูชีพ หน้ากากดำน้ำ รองเท้าแตะ โดยลองสำรวจตรวจสอบว่ายังใช้การได้ดีอยู่หรือเปล่า ไม่ใช่ว่ายางเปื่อยยืดหมดอายุ ห่วงยางรั่ว ก็จะได้เตรียมหาของใหม่ได้ทัน เตรียมยาที่จำเป็น แว่นตากันแดด ครีมกันแดดและโลชั่นหลังอาบแดดไปให้พร้อม เพราะปัจจุบันแสงแดดแรงมาก สามารถเผาผิวให้ไหม้เกรียมอักเสบได้ภายในวันเดียว และการลงเล่นน้ำทะเลควรใส่เสื้อยืดทับหรือสวมเสื้อสำหรับกีฬาทางน้ำถ้าได้เสื้อแขนยาว ชุดดำน้ำกางเกงขายาวคลุม ก็จะสามารถป้องกันแสงแดดและแมงกะพรุนหรืออันตรายจากสัตว์ทะเลที่มีพิษได้อีกด้วย

การเลือกชายหาดที่เด็กๆจะลงเล่นน้ำ ควรเลือกดูชายหาดที่มีความชันน้อย และควรเชื่อฟังคำเตือนจากหน่วยรักษาความปลอดภัยชายหาด เช่นหากทะเลมีคลื่นลมแรงจนมีการชักธงแดงขึ้นเตือน ก็ไม่ควรลงเล่นน้ำเพราะอาจจะเป็นอันตรายได้ การไปเที่ยวทะเลหรือลงเล่นน้ำทะเล ควรดื่มน้ำมากๆ เพราะร่างกายจะสูญเสียน้ำไปเป็นจำนวนมาก หากเด็กๆ เล่นน้ำจนเพลินร่ายกายเสียน้ำไปมากก็จะเกิดอาการอ่อนเพลียไม่สบายได้ง่ายๆ ไม่ควรลงเล่นน้ำหลังการกินอาหารอิ่มๆ เพราะอาจจะเกิดการจุกเสียด เป็นตะคริวบริเวณช่วงท้องจนจมน้ำได้ เด็กๆควรเล่นน้ำทะเลเป็นกลุ่ม โดยมีเด็กโตหรือผู้ใหญ่คอยควบคุมดูแล หรือมีผู้ใหญ่คอยดูแลไม่คลาดสายตา ในการเดินทางไปเที่ยวเกาะกลางทะเลที่ต้องลงเรือ ควรเตรียมอุปกรณ์เฉพาะที่จำเป็นไปเท่านั้นเพื่อให้เกิดความกระชับคล่องตัว สวมเสื้อชูชีพทุกครั้งที่ลงเรือไม่ว่าจะว่ายน้ำเป็นหรือไม่ ลงเรือแล้วควรเชื่อฟังกัปตันเรือ นั่งประจำที่ ไม่เดินไปมาโดยไม่จำเป็น โดยเฉพาะช่วงที่เรือแล่นไม่ควรเดินไปมาหรือปีนป่ายกราบข้างเรือหรือด้านท้ายเรือ เพราะอาจจะพลัดตกลงไปในน้ำ ซึ่งจะช่วยเหลือได้อย่างยากลำบาก ไม่ควรใช้มือเกาะจับขอบเรือเล็กเมื่อจะเข้าเทียบท่า หรือจอดเทียบกับเรือลำอื่น เพราะขอบเรืออาจจะกระทบกระแทกกัน หากใช้มือเกาะขอบเรือก็จะเกิดอันตรายได้

การไปดำน้ำชมปะการังน้ำตื้นแบบสนอร์เกิล ควรสวมชูชีพให้พร้อม และทดลองลอยตัวบริเวณน้ำตื้นๆริมชายหาดให้คุ้นชินก่อน ลองใช้หน้ากากและท่อหายใจให้เคยชินเสียก่อน จะได้ไม่ต้องไปตื่นตระหนกเมื่อลงเรือไปดำเหนือแนวปะการัง ขณะดำน้ำควรมีบัดดี้ หรือเพื่อนคู่ดำน้ำ เพื่อจะได้คอยดูแลกัน หรือเมื่อต้องการความช่วยเหลือก็จะได้ขอความช่วยเหลือและให้การช่วยเหลือกันได้ทันท่วงที ควรดำน้ำกันเป็นกลุ่ม ไม่ควรแยกตัวออกไปไกลจากกลุ่ม ไม่แตะต้องหรือยืนเหยียบบนโขดปะการัง เพราะจะทำให้ปะการังตาย เสียหายเสื่อมโทรมลงได้ ไม่ให้อาหารปลา เพราะจะทำให้ปลาสูญเสียพฤติกรรมตามธรรมชาติไป และอาจจะเกิดอันตรายต่อนักดำน้ำได้ การดำน้ำไม่ควรว่ายเข้าไปใกล้เรือที่ติดเครื่องยนต์ หรือแล่นผ่าน เพราะอาจจะเกิดอันตรายจากใบพัดเรือขึ้นได้ หากต้องขับรถกลับในวันนั้น ผู้รับหน้าที่ขับรถไม่ควรเล่นน้ำ ดำน้ำ จนร่ายกายเหนื่อยอ่อน เพราะอาจจะขับไม่ไหวหรือเกิดการอ่อนเพลีย เกิดหลับในขึ้นได้ จึงควรพักผ่อนให้เพียงพอ

การเที่ยวทะเลโดยวางแผนการเดินทางให้ดี เตรียมตัว เตรียมอุปกรณ์ให้พร้อม และปฏิบัติตนตามกฎของความปลอดภัย เท่านี้การเที่ยวทะเลของท่านและครอบครัว ก็จะมีความสุข รู้สึกร้อนกันแล้วหรือยังครับ ถ้ารู้สึกร้อนก็เตรียมจัดกระเป๋าไปทะเลกันดีกว่าครับ

ปิดท้ายที่ลูกนนทรีก็เดินทางมาเช่นกัน “สาวแอนท์-ประดับดาว คุ้มแพรวพรรณ” นักศึกษาชั้นปีที่ 4 มหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ มาพร้อมแปรงขัดอุปกรณ์คู่ใจในวันนี้เช่นกัน แอนท์มากับเพื่อนๆ อีกหลายคน นอกจากได้ทำกิจกรรมอันเป็นประโยชน์ให้กับสังคมส่วนรวมแล้ว งานนี้ยังได้เจอคนใจดี

“เมื่อเช้าแอนท์ขึ้นแท็กซี่ออกมาจากบ้าน หลังจากนัดหมายกับเพื่อนจะมาทำความสะอาดแล้วก็บอก คุณน้าแท็กซี่ว่าจะมาสวนลุม พื้นที่ชุมนุม คุณน้าคนขับรถก็เลยถามว่าจะมาทำอะไร อันตรายหรือเปล่า เราก็บอกเขาว่าเรามาทำความสะอาด แล้วเขาก็ไม่เก็บเงินเรา เขาบอกว่า เรามาทำประโยชน์เพื่อส่วนรวม โอ้โห ตั้งแต่เกิดมายังไม่เคยขึ้นรถแท็กซี่ฟรี และเพิ่งจะรู้สึกว่าจริงๆ แล้วคนไทยยังรักกันมาก แตกแยกกันเพียงบางกลุ่มเท่านั้น”นักศึกษาสรุป

Duchess of York 'wanted cash for Prince Andrew access'

The Duchess of York has been filmed offering to sell access to ex-husband Prince Andrew for £500,000 ($723,000), a newspaper has claimed.

The News of the World said Sarah Ferguson was filmed by an undercover reporter posing as a businessman.

She appears to accept a $40,000 cash payment, and is quoted as saying: "Look after me and he'll look after you."

The paper says the prince - a UK trade envoy - knew nothing about the deal. The duchess has not commented.

The duchess's spokeswoman, Kate Waddington, said she had not been told about the meeting and was "incandescent" it had taken place.

She said the word "naive" sprung to mind.

'Whiter than white'

According to the video soundtrack, the 50-year-old duchess tells the undercover reporter "£500,000 when you can, to me... open doors".

She also says the cash would "open up all the channels whatever you need, whatever you want, and then that's what and then you meet Andrew and that's fine.

"And that's, that's when you really open up whatever you want."

Duchess in the headlines again
The newspaper says that the duchess told the undercover reporter, who was posing as an international business tycoon: "Look after me and he'll look after you... you'll get it back tenfold. I can open any door you want."

The News of the World explains how its reporter met the duchess twice - in New York earlier this month and in London last week.

In the first encounter in the US, the paper says she offered to arrange a meeting, allegedly saying: "What I want you to do next is to meet Andrew... as soon as you come to London, come to the Royal Lodge.

"I'll introduce you and sit down and you'll talk to him about whatever."

Then later in London, the paper quotes her again arranging a meeting with Prince Andrew. "I did ask Andrew about meeting you... I never talk about money ever, but since we've got business hats on I'm going to..."

It was then that she appeared to accept the $40,000 cash payment and go on to discuss the wire transfer of a further £500,000.

The duchess, who was believed to be flying to the US to collect a charity award on Sunday, is also quoted as asking the reporter to donate 1% of profits on any resulting deals to her charity.

But she also says her ex-husband, who has been the UK's Special Representative for International Trade and Investment since 2001, "never does accept a penny for anything" and describes him as "completely whiter than white".

'Happiest divorced couple'

In the newspaper, the duchess describes Prince Andrew as "so amazing".

"We're the happiest divorced couple in the world," she says.

But she also claims she is suffering financial hardship and that her divorce settlement entitles her to just £15,000 a year.

"I have not got a bean to my name. I'm a taxpayer, a British taxpayer and I left the royal family for freedom and in freedom it means I am bereft. I'm hopeless."

The News of the World's royal editor, Robert Jobson, told the BBC the story was in the public interest.

"What is very serious here is that she's so desperate that she's prepared to jeopardise the reputation of her ex-husband and of the country, and of an important international ambassadorial role, which is, after all, funded in terms of the expenses by the taxpayer," he said.

The duchess's spokeswoman said the first she knew about the story "was in the early hours of this morning when she started getting press calls", said BBC royal correspondent June Kelly.

"The duchess herself hadn't been told by the newspaper they had this story, so she has woken up this morning to the fact that she is front-page news," our correspondent added.

The duchess's finances have been the subject of a number of negative headlines in recent years. In September, her spokeswoman confirmed court action had been taken over unpaid bills but denied the duchess had financial concerns.

'Very damaging'

Publicist Max Clifford told the BBC the royals were vulnerable to this kind of situation.

"Anybody that's close to any member of the Royal Family and that mixes with them socially potentially is in a position to do this kind of thing," he said.

Sarah Ferguson married Prince Andrew in 1986 and the couple had two daughters, Beatrice in 1988 and Eugenie in 1990.

Although they separated in 1992 and divorced in 1996, she and their daughters later moved back into a wing of the former marital home and maintain a close relationship with the Duke of York.

Our correspondent said that after a period of cool between the duchess and the Royal Family, there had been a sense of "rapprochement" in recent times.

The newspaper claims would therefore be "very damaging" to that relationship, she added.

Buckingham Palace said it would not be making any comment.

Prince Andrew's role as UK trade envoy involves promoting British business at home and overseas.

มีรายงานด้วยว่า เมื่อวันที่ 21 พ.ค.ที่ผ่านมา นางสุจินดา เชิดชัย หรือเจ๊เกียว ผู้สนับสนุนพรรคเพื่อไทย ในจังหวัดนครราชสีมา ซึ่งเป็นผู้หนึ่งที่ถูกคำสั่งศูนย์อำนวยการแก้ไขสถานการณ์ฉุกเฉิน (ศอฉ.) ให้ระงับการทำนิติธรรมทางการเงิน ได้เดินทางเข้าพบเจ้าหน้าที่ภายในอาคารทวาทศิน กรมทหารราบที่ 11 รักษาพระองค์ (ร.11 รอ.) เพื่อขอให้เพิกถอนรายชื่อออกจากบัญชีต้องห้าม เนื่องจากได้รับความเสียหาย ถูกเข้าใจผิดว่ามีส่วนให้การสนับสนุนการก่อความไม่สงบ

อย่างไรก็ตาม เจ้าหน้าที่ชี้แจงว่า คำสั่งดังกล่าวออกมาจาก ศอฉ. เบื้องต้นทำได้เพียงอนุมัติให้เพิกถอนการระงับธุรกรรมเป็นรายครั้ง โดยขอให้นำเอกสารรายจ่าย เช่น ค่าน้ำ ค่าไฟฟ้า ค่าน้ำมัน และบัญชีเงินเดือนพนักงานมาแสดง

(CNN) -- AC Milan coach Leonardo has left his position with the Italian Serie A giants by mutual consent.

The 40-year-old Brazilian signed a two-year contract with the Rossoneri at the start of the season.

However, his future has been in doubt for several weeks following a poor run of results that saw the San Siro club drop tamely out of the Scudetto title race.

Leonardo, who was a Milan hero as a player, told a news conference on Friday: "We are here to announce that we are parting ways through mutual consent, in a calm and serene manner, just as it has always been in our relationship throughout the years.

"The Champions League aim, which I desired so much, has been achieved and this morning we have decided to make it official. The time to end this adventure has come."

Leonardo took over the Milan reigns from Carlo Ancelotti but, despite leading the club to third place in the table, he has faced mounting criticism from media and fans alike for failing to mount a sustained challenge in both Serie A and the Champions League -- where they were crushed by Manchester United at the last 16 stage.

The Rossoneri also suffered a shock Coppa Italia defeat at the hands of Udinese earlier in the season.

Milan's final match of the season is at home to Juventus and -- despite losing three of their last four matches -- they are guaranteed third position regardless of the result.

Madrid, Spain (CNN) -- In his 22 years on the bench, Spain's Judge Baltasar Garzon has garnered many admirers for his groundbreaking work on international human rights cases, but also many enemies, including suspects he's jailed and politicians he's offended.

So on the eve of Friday's decision by Spain's judicial authority to suspend Garzon from the bench for alleged abuse of power - pending his trial at the Supreme Court - Garzon attended an event in Madrid where a throng of TV cameras and reporters were waiting.

"I am facing this calmly, knowing that I am innocent," Garzon told reporters. "And since I respect the law, I will accept the decision (on Friday) and continue with my defense so that the true situation is absolutely clear."
It was Garzon's chance to make sure his position was absolutely clear before the decision on Friday. He is no stranger to the media, and some Spaniards consider his personal style -- often described as flamboyant -- as unbefitting a judge.
Legal experts said the suspension of Garzon was required of the judicial authority -- and therefore widely expected -- given that Garzon is under indictment for allegedly overstepping his judicial authority in his investigation of human rights abuses under Spain's former dictator, Francisco Franco. No trial date has been set.
For weeks, there has been an outpouring of public support for Garzon in Spain and abroad, including in Argentina, whose former military regimes have come under Garzon's investigation as well for human rights abuses.
His most famous case internationally was against former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, starting in 1988, when Pinochet was arrested in a London hospital on a warrant from Garzon.
So many in Spain considered that after the Argentina and Chile investigations, the logical next step would be the darkest taboo of all --- Franco's dictatorship. Mass graves were already being unearthed by people searching for the remains of their relatives when Garzon got involved a few years ago.
But then his enemies appeared -- a far-right group called Manos Limpias (Clean Hands) charged that Garzon knew there was an amnesty law in Spain approved after Franco died in 1975, and therefore the subject was untouchable. Spain should move forward, and not relive its painful past.
But Garzon didn't just rile old Franco diehards with the investigation. A number of conservatives here remember well Garzon's outspoken stance against the Iraq War, when Spain's then-conservative Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar backed President Bush.
Years earlier, Garzon riled many Socialists here -- briefly serving in a Socialist government in the 1990s before quitting, only to return to the court and investigate wrongdoing involving some Socialists.
Born to a humble farming family among the olive groves of southern Spain, Garzon worked at a gas station to help pay for law school.
As an investigating magistrate, he has pursued the violent Basque separatist group ETA, al Qaeda, drug traffickers and corrupt officials who've taken kickbacks.

But when it came time to find votes among Spain's judicial authority to avoid the suspension, he came up short.
His next move? He's asked to work as an external adviser to the International Criminal Court at The Hague, Netherlands. But the judicial authority late Friday postponed a decision whether to let him do that.
So he went back to the courthouse, which he had already left at midday Friday to a round of applause from co-workers. And when he came out a second time, around 9pm local time, there were hundreds of supporters in the street cheering him on.
And a police cordon guarding him. Stepping into a car with his bodyguards, he blew a kiss to the crowd. A classic Garzon exit.

... นอกจากนี้ยังมีวรรณคดีอีกหลายเรื่องที่ใช้งานศิลปะบอกความในใจ มิให้ผู้อื่นล่วงรู้ความนัย นี่เป็นเพียงตัวอย่าง ..... ด้วยเหตุที่คนไทยเป็นคนที่มีน้ำใจ ใจเย็น จึงชอบงานที่ใช้ฝีมือ งานที่ประดิบประดอยในการทำสิ่งสวยๆงามๆขึ้น ซึ่งเป็นงานที่ใช้ความคิดสร้างสรรค์ เช่นการนำผักผลไม้นานาชนิดที่มีสีสันสวยสดนำมาแกะเกลา ให้ได้งานชิ้นใหม่ที่มีความสวยงามเกิดขึ้น แล้วงานศิลปะชิ้นนี้ก็ได้เป็นมรดกตกทอดมาถึงรุ่นลูกหลานไทย

...การนำผักผลไม้มาแกะสลัก จุดประสงค์แรก คือ เพื่อทำให้อาหารจานนั้นเกิดความสวยงามน่ารับประทาน และทำให้สามารถรับประทานผักผลไม้ได้สะดวกมากยิ่งขึ้น เช่น สมัยก่อนผู้หญิงที่เป็นแม่ศรีเรือน มีการต้อนรับแขกผู้มาเยือนด้วยการนำผลไม้ที่ปอกเปลือกปลิ้นเอาเมล็ดออก บางชนิดก็ต้องตัดทอนเป็นชิ้น และบางชนิดก็คว้านเอาเมล็ดออก ทำให้ผู้มาเยือนเกิดความประทับใจ ... เพราะสิ่งเหล่านี้เป็นสิ่งที่แสดงให้เห็นถึงความตั้งใจ และเต็มใจของผู้ทำ

.. ศิลปะวัฒนธรรมไทยของเรานั้นมีอยู่มากมาย แฝงไว้ด้วยความสวยงาม อ่อนช้อย ประณีต ทั้งในแง่ของรูปธรรม และนามธรรม ตลอดจนชีวิตของผู้คน ปัจจุบันนี้ศิลปะวัฒนธรรมของไทยเรานั้นเป็นที่รู้จักอย่างกว้างขวางในหมู่ชาวต่างประเทศ ทั้งแถบเอเชีย และในยุโรป-อเมริกา ... การแกะสลัก ผัก ผลไม้ หนึ่งในศิลปะ อันส่อให้เห็นวัฒนธรรม งานแสดงศิลปะ งานอาหาร งานจัดเลี้ยง ที่จะขาดการจัดแต่งเสียไม่ได้ ก็คือการแสดงวิธีแกะสลักผักผลไม้นั่นเอง
... การแกะสลักผักผลไม้ของไทยเรา สะท้อนให้เห็นวิถีชีวิตของการอยู่กินของคนไทยที่ประณีต มีความเป็นผู้มีศิลปะ ไม่สุกเอาเผากิน เป็นการสะท้อนให้เห็นถึงความรัก ความปราถนาดีของผู้ประดิบประดอยผักเพื่อให้แขก หรือผู้เป็นที่รักได้รับประทานผลไม้แบบวิจิตรบรรจงและยังเป็นรูปแบบที่ใช้ประดับบนโต๊ะอาหารให้สวยงามมีศิลปะ และยังสะท้อนให้เห็นถึงความเป็นผู้มีวัฒนธรรมอีกด้วย

การเลือกซื้อ ผักผลไม้

- หัวหอมชนิดต่างๆ เช่น หอมแดงหอมใหญ่ ควรเลือกหัวที่แน่นๆ สด เลือกหัวที่มีขนาดกลาง หรือ เล็ก โดยให้มีขนาดเท่ากัน
- แครอท ควาเลือกหัวตรงๆ ขนาดกลาง และใหญ่
- แรดิช หรือเรียกอีกอย่างหนึ่งว่า หัวผักกาดแดง ควรเลือกหัวที่สดไม่เหี่ยว หัวป้อมๆ เลือกหัวที่มีขนาดกลาง โดยให้มีขนาดเท่ากันทุกหัว


- หัวไชเท้า ควรเลือกหัวตรงๆ ขนาดกลาง เปลือกใสไม่ขุ่นถ้าหัวใหญ่เนื้อจะฟ่าม

- แตงร้าน แตงกวา ควรเลือกผิวเขียว ลูกตรงขนาดกลาง สำหรับแตงกวาให้เลือกผิวเขียวๆ เนื้อจะหนากว่าแตงกวาผิวนวลล้อมเขียว

- มะเขือเทศ เลือกลูกขนาดเท่า ๆ กัน ซึ่งมะเขือเทศลูกรีๆ เนื้อจะหนากว่ามะเขื้อเทศลูกแป้นๆ เลือกลูกสดๆ ผิวไม่เหี่ยว

- ฟักทอง เลือกเนื้อหนาๆ และแน่นๆ โดยสังเกตุได้จากผิวต้องไม่ขรุขระ

- พริกชี้ฟ้า เลือกสดๆ ผิวตึงๆ เลือกเม็ดเล็กๆ เพราะถ้าใช้เม็ดใหญ่จะเต็มจาน ถ้าแกะเป็นดอกหน้าวัวจึงจะใช้เม็ดใหญ่

- ต้นหอม ต้นกระเทียม เลือกต้นที่มีใบสดเขียว ไม่เหลือง ต้นขนาดกลาง ต้นอวบๆ

- กระชาย เลือกรากสดอ้วนๆ ไม่เหี่ยว

- กะหล่ำปลีและผักกาดขาว ต้องเลือกที่สด แน่น หัวขนาดกลาง ซึ่งจะมีน้ำหนักมาก

- มะนาว เลือกสดๆ

- เผือก ใช้หัวขนาดกลาง ใช้เผือกหอมเนื้อจะละเอียด

การสมรส คือ การที่ชายและหญิงจะเริ่มต้นชีวิตครอบครัว สร้างหลักฐานให้มั่นคงเป็นปึกแผ่น และมีผู้สืบสกุลต่อไป ชายและหญิงที่จะมาอยู่ร่วมกันด้วยความผาสุกราบรื่น โดยตลอดนั้นจำเป็นต้องยึดหลักธรรมะหลายประการ เช่น คหบดีธรรม หรือธรรมะของผู้ครองเรือน ได้แก่

1. สัจจะ ซื่อสัตย์ต่อกัน ไว้วางใจกัน และจริงใจต่อกัน
2. ทมะ รู้จักข่มจิต มีความยับยั้งชั่งใจ ไม่แสดงความหุนหันพลันแล่น

พระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ได้ทรงบัญญัติถ้อยคำเกี่ยวกับการสมรสไว้เป็น 3 อย่าง คือ ข้าราชการผู้มีบรรดาศักดิ์เรียกว่า "สมรส"พระองค์เจ้า หรือหม่อมเจ้าเรียกว่า "เสกสมรส"เจ้าฟ้าเรียกว่า "อภิเษกสมรส"
เมื่อพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวรัชกาลปัจจุบัน "ราชาภิเษก"ได้มีพระบรมราชโองการสถาปนาพระอัครมเหสี โดยประกาศวันที่ 28 เมษายน พ.ศ.2493 ความตอนหนึ่งว่า "มีพระบรมราชโองการโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ประกาศว่า "ได้ทรงประกอบพระราชพิธีราชาภิเษกสมรสกับหม่อมราชวงศ์สิริกิติ์ กิติยากร ถูกต้องตามกฎหมายและราชประเพณีโดยสมบูรณ์ทุกประการแล้ว"

ในปีพ.ศ.2489 เมื่อรัฐบาลในนามของประชาชนทั้งประเทศ กราบบังคมทูลอัญเชิญพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดช ขึ้นครองราชย์สืบราชสันตติวงศ์ต่อจากพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวอานันทมหิดลนั้น ประเทศไทยขาดพระบรมราชินีมาเป็นเวลานานหลายปีแล้ว เมื่อพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงหมั้น สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถ ซึ่งขณะนั้นคือ ม.ร.ว.สิริกิติ์ กิติยากร ธิดาเอกอัครราชฑูตไทย ณ กรุงลอนดอน เมื่อวันที่ 12 สิงหาคม พ.ศ.2492 ประชาชนชาวไทยจึงพากันตื่นเต้นยินดี ยิ่งได้ทราบว่าพระคู่หมั้นทรงมีพระสิริโฉมงดงาม มีพระปรีชาสามารถ

วันราชาภิเษกสมรสของ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดชฯ กับ สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถ ซึ่งในขณะนั้นยังทรงดำรงพระอิสริยยศเป็นสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว และหม่อมราชวงศ์สิริกิติ์ กิติยากร

คงยังจดจำภาพแห่งความประทับใจและความปลื้มปิติของประชาชนคนไทยในช่วงเวลานั้นได้
นับตั้งแต่สำนักพระราชวังประกาศข่าวการหมั้นด้วยพระธำมรงค์ที่สมเด็จพระบรมราชชนกประทานแก่ สมเด็จพระศรีนครินทราบรมราชชนนี สมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงสวมพระธำมรงค์นี้พระราชทานแก่หม่อมราชวงศ์สิริกิติ์ กิติยากร เมื่อวันที่ 19 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. 2492 และอีก 1 เดือนต่อมา คือวันที่ 12 สิงหาคม ก็ได้ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้จัดงานเลี้ยงฉลองการหมั้นเป็นลักษณะงานเล็กๆ ขึ้น ณ สถานเอกอัครราชทูตไทยในกรุงลอนดอน ประเทศอังกฤษ

และจากนั้นมา กิจวัตรของชาวกรุงเทพฯ ก็คือเมื่อทราบข่าวการเสด็จพระราชดำเนินที่ไหน เมื่อใดก็จะพากันไปรอเฝ้าฯสองข้างทางที่เสด็จฯผ่านอย่างเนืองแน่น หลายต่อหลายคนถึงกับเตรียมผ้าและดาษไปปูรองนั่ง จองที่ตามริมถนนกันไว้ก่อนเวลาเสด็จฯเป็นชั่วโมง ที่พิเศษกว่านั้นก็คือ เมื่อมีข่าวพูดกันต่อๆ มาว่า ในเวลาบ่ายเกือบเย็น พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวมักทรงขับรถพระที่นั่งไปยังวังเทเวศร์เพื่อเสวยพระสุธารสชากับพระคู่หมั้นประชาชนที่อยู่ใกล้เคียงตามแถบนั้น ก็จะพากันไปเฝ้ารอคอยด้วยความรู้สึกที่เปี่ยมไปด้วยความจงรักภักดี แม้คนที่อยู่ไกลก็ยังอุตส่าห์นั่งรถรางหรือไม่ก็รถเมล์ไปลงยังเทเวศร์เพื่อที่จะรอเฝ้าฯ ตามริมถนนริมคลองบ้างและบริเวณใกล้เคียงวังเทเวศร์บ้าง โดยไม่คำนึงว่าเวลาจะผ่านไปจนเย็นค่ำเพียงใด

บางคนที่โชคดีก็อาจได้เห็นพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวในฉลองพระองค์แบบลำลอง คือทรงกางเกงยาวสีขาวและฉลองพระองค์เชิ้ตสีขาว ประทับ ณ พระเก้าอี้สนามหน้าพระตำหนักริมแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยากับพระคู่หมั้นซึ่งทรงฉลองพระองค์เสื้อปักลูกไม้และซิ่นไหมยาวแบบไทยเรียบร้อยงดงาม แต่ส่วนใหญ่มักได้ชื่นชมภาพประทับใจเช่นนี้ทางหนังสือพิมพ์

วันที่ 28 เมษายน 2493 ซึ่งเป็นวันสำคัญที่สุด จึงมีประชาชนล้นหลามตามสองฟากทางที่เสด็จฯผ่าน โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งคือที่บริเวณหน้าวังสระปทุม ซึ่งพระราชพิธีราชาภิเษกสมรสได้จัดขึ้นที่พระตำหนักสมเด็จพระศรีสวรินทิราบรมราชเทวี พระพันวัสสาอัยยิกาเจ้า ตั้งแต่ตอนเช้า ท่านผู้หญิงเกนหลง สนิทวงศ์ฯ บันทึกเหตุการณ์มหามงคลนี้ อันเป็นประวัติศาสตร์ช่วงหนึ่งของชาติไทยไว้ในเรื่อง "เป็น อยู่ คือ สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ"ว่า
" หม่อมเจ้านักขัตรมงคลทรงพาหม่อมราชวงศ์สิริกิติ์ ซึ่งแต่งกายชุดสีงาช้าง เสื้อแพรแขนยาวปักลาย กระหนกทอง สร้อยคอเพชร สร้อยข้อมือเพชรของเก่าของสมเด็จพระพันวัสสาอัยยิกาเจ้า และต่างหูเพชรของเก่าฝีมือทำขึ้นใหม่ สายสะพายปฐมจุลจอมเกล้า ไปยังวังสระปทุมประทับรอในห้องรับแขก
