Nikhil Mehra got the good news two weeks ago. The Indian tennis star Sania Mirza was engaged to the Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik, and she wanted her wedding finery to be designed by Mehra and his brother, the team behind the label Shantanu & Nikhil. Already a favorite of Bollywood stars and billionaires' daughters, they were a natural choice for the headstrong, glamorous woman who has become a symbol of the new India. "So many millions of people look up to her," Mehra says. "She's young, and we're a young brand."
While dozens of craftsmen labored over the beading and embroidery, the wedding itself started to unravel. But it wasn't because a handful of Hindu right-wingers had criticized Mirza, a Muslim, for making a match with India's archenemy Pakistan. She shrugged them off and explained that they would live in Dubai and continue to play for their own countries. Nor was it because of her often difficult relationship with Hyderabad's conservative Muslim community, which is proud of her success but uneasy with her brash persona — she was, after all, marrying another Muslim with both families' blessings.

Mirza's cross-border fairy tale had, instead, turned into a sordid tabloid drama when another woman from Hyderabad said she was already married to Malik. The other woman, Ayesha Siddiqui, whose family lives in the posh Banjara Hills neighborhood on a street adjacent to Mirza's, filed a criminal case of "cheating" against Malik. Although the cricketer claimed he had been tricked into marrying someone he'd never met, his earlier marriage was widely known in Hyderabad's society circles, particularly after the Siddiqui family hosted a dinner for the Pakistani cricket team in 2005. Mirza stood by her man as the police questioned him, insisting, "Me and my family know what the truth is."
Whatever that may be, the couple dubbed "Shoania" by the Indian press are now legally married. Malik got a divorce from Siddiqui, the charges against him were dropped, and he married Mirza in a small nikah ceremony at her parents' home on Monday. Hyderabad's 16 Telugu-language TV channels, the national English-language media and dozens of regional newspapers are now in full stalking and gawking mode. Several channels devoted their entire morning news coverage to the nikah, the first of four days of festivities. Reporters have staked out the Taj Krishna hotel, site of Thursday's reception, where Mirza will unveil her designer confection — a flared silk tunic over slim, gauzy leggings — and greet about 1,000 guests. The city is dealing with other issues — most notably a recent spasm of Hindu-Muslim violence and a fight over the creation of a new state in the region — but in today's media-saturated India, celebrity trumps politics. Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani managed only a handshake with his Indian counterpart in Washington this week, but his wedding gift to the happy couple is reportedly on the way, as are those of several other prominent politicians.

"It has become like a reality-TV show," says Asaduddin Owaisi, a third-generation politician who represents Hyderabad in Parliament. Owaisi, a broad-chested, London-trained barrister, is just glad it's over. As leader of the All India Majlis-e Ittihad al-Muslimin, one of the oldest Muslim political parties in India, he was dismayed at how the wedding drama played into stereotypes about Muslims. The rest of India, he believes, can't resist a story about the repression of women by Islam. Malik's first marriage was performed over the phone, and Siddiqui's subsequent rejection seemed like yet another example of a woman being cast aside under India's controversial Muslim marriage and divorce laws. Only the intervention of a group of elders from the city's Muslim community ended what could have been a lengthy legal battle.
It is a difficult time for Hyderabad's Muslims. They make up 40% of the city's 8 million people, by far the largest Muslim population in any major Indian city. Before independence, Hyderabad was a small kingdom ruled by a fabulously wealthy, shrewd nizam, and Muslims were a privileged minority who dominated the professions and held 30% of government jobs. After partition, however, most of the Muslim elite left for Pakistan. Today, Muslims hold only about 2% of the government jobs and Owaisi is the only Muslim Parliament member in the entire state.

With low levels of education relative to Hindus, Muslims have largely been left out of the technology boom that has surged through the rest of the city. Instead, they have gravitated to the Persian gulf countries to look for work, but those opportunities have largely dried up in the global recession, leaving many men jobless, bitter and in some cases radicalized. At the end of March, the city endured four days of Hindu-Muslim rioting, sparked by a dispute over flags for a Muslim holiday on a Hindu temple and a false rumor that the city's Hindu temples would be attacked. Three people died, more than 100 were injured and 18 mosques were damaged. The riots had just begun when Mirza announced her engagement, raising fears that the violence would escalate. But the media quickly shifted almost all of their attention to the wedding, giving little coverage to the 2.5 million Muslims who remained under curfew for several days.
Muslims aren't the only ones feeling dispossessed. The city is also home to the Telengana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) political party, whose charismatic leader, K. Chandrashekar Rao, went on a "fast until death" in December, demanding that India carve a new state, Telengana, out of the existing state of Andhra Pradesh. Farmers in the poor, parched interior region of Telengana have long complained of exploitation by the communities in the richer, coastal Andhra region. The TRS believes that a new state would end the coastal castes' dominance over government jobs, scarce water and power and Hyderabad's extremely valuable real estate. Rao and his party's leaders went to Delhi on Tuesday to present their case for statehood to the central government.

Inside the TRS headquarters, a flat-screen television displays two news channels side by side: a Telengana mouthpiece and a popular Andhra channel. Images of the cracked, drought-hit fields of Telengana appear alongside the plump, gyrating dancers of Telugu films and, of course, the latest on the Shoania wedding. One of the TRS leaders, B. Vinod Kumar, shrugs when asked about the fascination with Sania Mirza. "She's a celebrity," he says. But soon, he adds, the media will move on.

Before we begin, it’s essential I explain that I was asked to write this article. I did not look in the mirror recently and think: “Wow! You look incredible. So incredible, in fact, that you should pen an article on how it is that at 40 you look so much better than you did at 20.”
No, a “friend” (is that what you call them in England? Here in New York, attractive, intelligent females are usually referred to as “the competition”), who is an editor on this paper, suggested I explain my apparent transformation from a frizzy-haired (permed) brunette, who had front teeth that crossed, wore permanently laddered tights and scrunchies in her hair, and had a slightly plump physique, into, well, whatever she sees me as now. Who knows what that is? Sex goddess? A slightly smaller-breasted version of Paris Hilton? Or a dead ringer for Sienna Miller (I have actually been called that)?
Anyway, whatever it is she sees, she wants me to explain how I went from being a real-life Bridget Jones to ... It. Oh, and did my soul acquire a hardened shell of gloss as well as my outer parts?
Well, that’s a lot of ground to cover in 1,000 measly words. First, in 1997, I took a plane from London to New York, where I have resided ever since. A few weeks later, the most important part of my makeover began: I visited the dentist. He was no fancy Park Avenue practitioner, but the professor of dentistry at NY university (in other words, he’s downtown). He looked inside my mouth and muttered something that sounded suspiciously like, “What is wrong with that country?”
“But I had braces,” I replied lamely. “Yes,” he said. “On the bottom teeth.” He handed me a mirror. “If you’ll notice, the teeth that are moving and are crossing over are your front top teeth.” Zoikes.
So my teeth were encased in braces from my late twenties pretty much until my late thirties. (Fortunately they invented Invisalign — plastic invisible braces — for the latter years.) Even so, I met Rupert Murdoch with railway tracks on my teeth. Then I met his son Lachlan (and silently prayed I did not have spinach in my tracks as we ate dinner). I felt hugely relieved when Lachlan opened his mouth and, lo — he had braces too.
So, after three sets of braces to realign my jaw, about eight root canals, and so much gum surgery I’m not sure that much of my original gum is even in my mouth, I now have gleaming white movie-star teeth; and I am still paying off the dentist’s bill.
Then there were the hair and weight to deal with. First, the hair. For years my mane manager has been an Irishman named Kieran McKenna. He works at Oscar Blandi on Madison Avenue.
“Cut it all off,” said Kieran when he saw the frizzed mess. I loved the frizzed mess. I thought it gave my hair “body”. “Look around you,” he said. “This is not London. This is New York. Here hair moves. Here hair is healthy. Unhealthy hair is not sexy. Men hate unhealthy hair.”
So I was bald for about a year. Then my hair grew back. Then he highlighted it — gently. “Never over-colour your hair, it can’t take it,” he told me. But then I committed a hair crime he had not warned me against: I swam in a chlorinated pool. The hair was cut off again. I watched it fall on the floor. I cried.
“Only swim if you pour soda water over your hair first, apply conditioner and wear a cap,” said a cross Kieran. He added: “And you can only swim once a week, max, unless you swim in the ocean, but if you swim in salt water, you need to rinse before and after. Immediately.”
So I quit swimming (well, wouldn’t you?) and started jogging five miles a day. The hair — trimmed religiously every six weeks (“That’s the secret to having long hair,” according to Kieran) — was shaping up, so it was time to sort out the figure. I was an English size 10-12, which is normal by average American standards, but definitely “fat” in that thin-person-only zone known as New York.

Cameron in naked bid to woo Lib Dem voters

Philippe Naughton Recommend? (13) David Cameron tried to tempt away potential Lib Dem voters today, insisting that only a progressive Tory government could bring “real change” for Britain.
Ten days from the general election, with opinion polls suggesting that a hung Parliament is now the most likely outcome, the Conservative leader insisted that his party still aimed to win a clear majority.
But while stressing that he supported the current first-past-the-post electoral system, he refused to rule out electoral reform as part of a powersharing deal with the Liberal Democrats.
“I support the electoral system. I think it is a decisive way of changing our government,” Mr Cameron said at a campaign event in Westminster. “I do not want the electoral system changed.”

Mr Cameron was speaking after the Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg, riding high after strong performances in the first two televised leaders’ debates, described proportional representation as an “absolute pre-condition” for the renewal of Britain.
Mr Clegg has warned that he would not let Gordon Brown “squat” in Number 10 if Labour trails in the popular vote next Thursday, but most observers think Mr Clegg and his party colleagues would prefer to do a deal with Labour - which is already wooing him - than with the Tories.
Mr Cameron warned that electoral reform, rather than helping to clean up politics and make it more transparent, would lead to a situation where politicians ruled by “haggling and scheming”.
“This is the great con of PR,” he said. “It doesn’t put power in the hands of the people, it puts power in the hands of politicians.”
He also dismissed suggestions that he could hold a referendum on electoral reform. “We are not proposing a referendum on PR because we do not support PR,” he said.
In the meantime, Mr Cameron clearly understands that he must stake out his position in the centre ground if wants to secure a majority.
“How can we achieve real change in this country? How can we make a clean break from the past? What we’re saying today is there is only one answer to these questions, and that is a new, strong Conservative government,” he said.
He said the Tories were bringing forward radical policies on the environment, such as allowing local communities more scope to build parks, and pledging to plant a tree for every child born in England.
Mr Cameron also stressed the Conservatives’ opposition to Labour’s proposals for extending detention without charge for suspected terrorists.
“I want to speak directly to the people who have idealism and progressive ideals hardwired into their DNA, everyone who is desperate for real change,” Mr Cameron said, borrowing a soundbite from the Lib Dem manifesto launch.
“Whether you’ve been a Lib Dem voter or a Labour voter or a Green voter - if you care about the environment, if you want action to improve your quality of life, if you care about civil liberties, if you care about people power, if you want a clean break from the past - vote Conservative.”
At an earlier press conference, in Edinburgh, Mr Clegg did not rule out a deal with either Labour or Conservatives if May 6 produces an indecisive result, arguing that the key issue would be whether other parties are willing to sign up to the Lib Dems’ four priorities, including PR.
He reignited speculation that he may be willing to form a pact with Labour if Gordon Brown is removed as leader, by naming Alan Johnson, the Home Secretary, as someone who apparently shares his views.
The Lib Dem leader rejected the “dusty convention” that the Prime Minister should be given first chance to form a Government, even if his party has come third in terms of votes, saying that the opportunity should first be given to the party with most seats and votes.
The Tories have warned that voting for Lib Dems could leave Britain “stuck” with Mr Brown after the election. But Labour’s campaign chief, Lord Mandelson, yesterday sought to turn round the Tory attack by claiming that Mr Clegg had shown his preference to side with Conservatives in a coalition and warning that “voters who flirt with Nick Clegg are likely to end up married to David Cameron”.
Andy Burnham, the Health Secretary, this morning warned the Lib Dem leader not to assume he will be the kingmaker following the election.
Addressing the prospect that Labour could come third in terms of votes but hold the most seats at Westminster, Mr Burnham told Sky News: “We obviously will work with what the country decides. Nick Clegg has had a good campaign in many ways, but he sounded yesterday like he was beginning to believe his own hype and that he was the man who was going to sort it all out.
“Let’s just wait and see what the country says. It is not votes cast, it is seats in the House of Commons that will determine what happens, and people will have to deal with the situation as it arises.”
Mr Clegg today underlined his call for “fundamental change” in Britain’s politics, economy, public services and taxation, adding: “If the Tories or anybody else were to suddenly announce that they agree with these changes, then no-one would be more delighted than me.
“What I care about is not the label on the politician, but the changes we are seeking to deliver for the benefit of the British people.”
He added: “I think electoral reform is a first step which any government of whatever composition will need to introduce to start restoring public trust in the system. I don’t think after this election it will ever be possible to put the genie back in the bottle. Electoral reform is an absolute pre-condition for renewal in this country.”
Mr Brown, meanwhile, said it was “arrogant” for politicians to discuss the deals they might be able to strike after the election before the voters have even had their say.
In a BBC interview to be transmitted on Wednesday, the Prime Minister said: “I do find it strange that politicians, other than me, are spending their time speculating about what happens after the election. I think they might be better putting their attention into putting the policies to the people before the election...
“If it’s a clear result we’ll accept it, if it’s a different result then we’ve got to deal with it, but don’t presume what the people are going to vote before they vote... because that would be arrogant.”
Mr Brown said he believed voters would make up their minds “probably at the last minute” because they are weighing up proposals for change with proposals for economic stability, jobs and public services.

Recommend? (1) HUGH OSMOND, the tycoon behind some of Britain’s best-known companies, has made a takeover offer for Crest Nicholson, the housebuilder, as part of an audacious scheme to consolidate the beleaguered construction sector.
Horizon, Osmond’s acquisition vehicle, tabled a bid for Crest last week that values it between £300m and £350m.
Osmond, who built up Pizza Express, created Punch Taverns and ran Pearl Assurance, has a hitlist of companies that have been crippled by debts during the recession.
The City had been on tenterhooks waiting to see what Osmond’s first target would be, with rumours regularly sweeping the market.

Osmond made his move last week, putting the takeover plan to a meeting of Crest’s 40 banks on Wednesday. The housebuilder's main lender is Lloyds Banking Group.
Lloyds took control of Crest last year through a debt-for-equity swap at the peak of the credit crisis. It was one of a number of housebuilders that fell into the bank’s hands as house prices started to collapse.
It is understood that the deal will go ahead only if Osmond receives a commitment from the banks that they will consider selling other property firms and land portfolios that have come under their control.
The project is one of four takeovers being considered by the Horizon team, according to market sources. It is also believed to be the smallest of the firm’s potential deals. Horizon raised close to £420m of equity through a stock-market listing this year and has been targeting companies with an enterprise value — equity plus debt — of up to £3 billion.
Other potential deals are spread across a variety of sectors. When Osmond raised the new fund, he told investors he was not interested in property-based investments but has since changed his mind.
The collapse in property prices has left housebuilders across the country in breach of their lendng agreements with banks, forcing many to sell off assets at distressed prices.
None of the established players in housebuilding has yet to emerge as a potential consolidator that could pull together the sector.
Crest Nicholson was part of a disastrous foray into housebuilding by HBOS, the bank that collapsed into Lloyds’ arms in September 2008.
Lloyds led a group of Crest’s lenders that wrote off £630m of debt in return for a 90% stake in the company, which builds about 2,000 homes a year and is concentrated in southeast England and the Midlands.
It had been owned through a 50:50 joint venture between HBOS and Sir Tom Hunter, the Scottish entrepreneur whose investment arm, West Coast Capital, was one of the biggest casualties of the recession.
They bought the firm for £1.2 billion in May 2007 — close to the peak of the housing market — in a deal that was paid for almost entirely through debt financing.

Popular with Basque families, it’s also a working port, with a large fishing fleet landing tuna and anchovies, hence the slew of excellent restaurants. The main beach is to the north of town, in front of the casino; it’s safe for swimming, has children’s play areas and is supervised during the summer.

Recommend? (1) HUGH OSMOND, the tycoon behind some of Britain’s best-known companies, has made a takeover offer for Crest Nicholson, the housebuilder, as part of an audacious scheme to consolidate the beleaguered construction sector.
Horizon, Osmond’s acquisition vehicle, tabled a bid for Crest last week that values it between £300m and £350m.
Osmond, who built up Pizza Express, created Punch Taverns and ran Pearl Assurance, has a hitlist of companies that have been crippled by debts during the recession.
The City had been on tenterhooks waiting to see what Osmond’s first target would be, with rumours regularly sweeping the market.

Osmond made his move last week, putting the takeover plan to a meeting of Crest’s 40 banks on Wednesday. The housebuilder's main lender is Lloyds Banking Group.
Lloyds took control of Crest last year through a debt-for-equity swap at the peak of the credit crisis. It was one of a number of housebuilders that fell into the bank’s hands as house prices started to collapse.
It is understood that the deal will go ahead only if Osmond receives a commitment from the banks that they will consider selling other property firms and land portfolios that have come under their control.
The project is one of four takeovers being considered by the Horizon team, according to market sources. It is also believed to be the smallest of the firm’s potential deals. Horizon raised close to £420m of equity through a stock-market listing this year and has been targeting companies with an enterprise value — equity plus debt — of up to £3 billion.
Other potential deals are spread across a variety of sectors. When Osmond raised the new fund, he told investors he was not interested in property-based investments but has since changed his mind.
The collapse in property prices has left housebuilders across the country in breach of their lendng agreements with banks, forcing many to sell off assets at distressed prices.
None of the established players in housebuilding has yet to emerge as a potential consolidator that could pull together the sector.
Crest Nicholson was part of a disastrous foray into housebuilding by HBOS, the bank that collapsed into Lloyds’ arms in September 2008.
Lloyds led a group of Crest’s lenders that wrote off £630m of debt in return for a 90% stake in the company, which builds about 2,000 homes a year and is concentrated in southeast England and the Midlands.
It had been owned through a 50:50 joint venture between HBOS and Sir Tom Hunter, the Scottish entrepreneur whose investment arm, West Coast Capital, was one of the biggest casualties of the recession.
They bought the firm for £1.2 billion in May 2007 — close to the peak of the housing market — in a deal that was paid for almost entirely through debt financing.

Army ready to regain Ratchaprasong when situation permits

BANGKOK, April 24 (TNA) - After hearing complaints by Bangkokians of their hardships in travel within the city and commuting to work due to thousands of anti-government protesters occupying Ratchaprasong intersection, Bangkok’s prime business district, for three weeks, an army spokesman said Saturday that soldiers are ready to regain the area when the situation permits, after the 'misinformed, innocent protesters' have left the rally site.
Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd, as spokesman of Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES), said the ongoing protest by the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) is not taking place only at Ratchaprasong but it has spread to a number of provinces nationwide.
Protests upcountry can still be controlled by the government, but to disperse the crowd at Ratchaprasong could fuel protests taking place in some provinces and could aggravate hatred in future, he said.
UDD protesters have rallied at Ratchaprasong intersection since April 2 and later abandoned their main demonstration site on Ratchadamnoen Avenue.
They now demand that Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva dissolve the House within one month and hold fresh general elections within 60 days after that.
He said the government and the CRES should together explain to the upcountry public so they understand the situation, and at the same time convince as many innocent people as possible to leave the rally site so that government forces can disperse the protesters.
Dispersing the protesters, or even suppressing them, is not appropriate now, but with several new measures, it is “possible that we could achieve that target,” said Col Sansern.
Police are adapting their strategies to coordinate with the army, he said. Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, director of CRES, will meet with provincial governors Sunday on what should be explained to people in provinces. (TNA)

Former prime minister Anand Panyarachun yesterday called on the Abhisit government to quickly put an end to the political turmoil, which he said could lead to society completely unravelling.

"If you ask me, the first thing that is needed to be done is for the government to quickly end all this turmoil and bring back peace, or we may experience a social disaster," Anand said. "The conflict has been about heads of the two camps fighting, but now the general public are suffering and some people have not been able to earn their living [including the red shirts]."
He said it was sad to see poor people having to sit out in the sun and the rain for weeks, deprived of a chance to live a proper life.
"There can be protests, but there shouldn't be such intensity of hatred or yearning for revenge," Anand said. "This is really a time when everyone has to start talking and bring back peace."
He had slight criticism for former prime ministers Chavalit Yongchaiyudh and Somchai Wongsawat following their controversial call for royal intervention in the political crisis. The call was made in an untraditional manner and the two were seeking an audience with His Majesty the King in an untraditional way, Anand said.
Meanwhile, Somchai met the National Human Rights Commission yesterday to endorse the red shirts' claims of severe human rights abuses on April 10, the day protesters clashed with troops, leaving 25 dead and more than 800 injured.
Showing the red shirts' videos of the April 10 events to the commission, Somchai said the government attempted to get away with the bloodshed by labelling some of the protesters "terrorists".
Somchai said he urged the commission to go on TV and demand an end to violent measures against the anti-government protesters. He said the red shirts had been willing to negotiate with the government but "the situation had changed".
Somchai, however, did not rule out renewed peace talks, with the commission serving as a mediator.
Commission members declined comment after the meeting.

Red shirts reject latest offer for a dissolution

The United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship has rejected the government's latest offer to dissolve the House in six months.
Interior Minister and Bhumjaithai Party leader Chavarat Charnvirakul said yesterday the new proposal to end the political crisis was reached in talks between leaders and supporters of the coalition parties on Sunday.
Banharn Silpa-archa, chief adviser to the Chart Thai Pattana Party, was assigned to convey the decision to the UDD. The veteran Suphan Buri politician contacted UDD chairman Veera Musikhapong yesterday but a request for negotiations was turned down, Mr Chavarat said.
Other UDD leaders, including Jatuporn Prompan and Weng Tojirakarn, demanded an immediate parliament dissolution and quick elections by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva instead of a longer time frame offered by the coalition government.

"All we want is for Mr Abhisit to dissolve the House and call new general elections urgently," Mr Jatuporn, a Puea Thai Party MP, said.
Dr Weng said the immediate solution was to dissolve the parliament. "I guarantee all red shirts will return home if Mr Abhisit dissolves the House," he said.
The UDD will not hold further talks with the government to seek ways to put an end to the conflict.
Mr Abhisit and UDD leaders held two rounds of talks last month but were unable to reach any agreements as supporters of convicted former premier Thaksin Shinawatra had rejected the government's first offer of a dissolution in nine months.
Mr Abhisit said yesterday in a televised address the dissolution option was still available for discussion with the red shirts and his proposal in March had been revised to find a political solution.
But the prime minister did not abandon other plans to end the demonstration at Phan Fa Bridge and Ratchaprasong intersection.
Mr Abhisit said the government considered armed assailants attacking security forces on Saturday night to be "terrorists". The government would move to separate the "terrorists" from innocent demonstrators.
At a news conference at the 11th Infantry Regiment, the prime minister said all relevant government agencies will work on anti-terrorist measures.
"We want to call for all innocent people not to join the movement or become a tool of the movement," Mr Abhisit said.
Once the "terrorists" are clearly separated from innocent people, the government will be able to map out appropriate measures to end the unrest, he said.
Army chief Anupong Paojinda said he favoured a political solution instead of military means to end the confrontation, adding political problems could only be resolved by political means.

"มะรุม" มีชื่อทางวิทยาศาสตร์ว่า Moringa oleifera Lam. วงศ์ Moringaceae เป็นพืชกำเนิดแถบใต้เชิงเขาหิมาลัย เป็นไม้ยืนต้นขนาดกลางที่ถูกปลูกไว้ในบริเวณบ้านไทยมาแต่โบราณ กินได้หลายส่วน ทั้งยอด ดอก และฝักเขียว แต่ใครๆ ก็นิยมกินฝักมากกว่าส่วนอื่นๆ ต้นมะรุมพบได้ทุกภาคในประเทศไทย ทางอีสานเรียก “ผักอีฮุม หรือผักอีฮึม” ภาคเหนือเรียก “มะค้อมก้อน” ชาวกะเหรี่ยงแถบกาญจนบุรีเรียก “กาแน้งเดิง” ส่วนชานฉานแถบแม่ฮ่องสอนเรียก “ผักเนื้อไก่” เป็นต้น
ผู้เฒ่าผู้แก่นิยมกินมะรุมในช่วงต้นหนาวเพราะเป็นฤดูกาลของฝักมะรุม หาได้ง่าย รสชาติอร่อยเพราะสดเต็มที่ มีขายตามตลาดในช่วงฤดูกาล คนที่ปลูกมะรุมไว้ในบ้านเท่านั้นจึงจะมีโอกาสลิ้มรสยอดมะรุม ใบอ่อน ช่อดอกและฝักอ่อน ช่อดอกนำไปดองเก็บไว้กินกับน้ำพริก ยอดมะรุม ใบอ่อน ช่อดอก และฝักอ่อนนำมาลวกหรือต้ทให้สุก จิ้มกับน้ำพริกปลาร้า น้ำพริกแจ่วบอง กินแนมกับลาบ ก้อย แจ่วได้ทุกอย่าง หรือจะใช้ยอดอ่อน ช่อดอกทำแกงส้มหรือแกงอ่อมก็ได้

คุณค่าทางอาหารของมะรุม
มะรุมเป็นพืชมหัศจรรย์ มีคุณค่าทางโภชนาการสูงสุด กล่าวถึงในคัมภีร์ใบเบิ้ลว่าเป็นพืชที่รักษาทุกโรค
ใบมะรุมมีโปรตีนสูงกว่านมสด 2 เท่า การกินใบมะรุมตามชนบทของประเทศกำลังพัฒนาและประเทศโลกที่ 3 เป็นการเพิ่มโปรตีนคุณภาพสูงราคาถูกให้กับอาหารพื้นบ้าน

2.ใช้รักษาผู้ป่วยเป็นโรคเบาหวานให้อยู่ในภาวะควบคุมได้
3.รักษาโรคความดันโลหิตสูง

ชะลอความแก่
กล่าวกันว่ามะรุมมีฤทธิ์ชะลอความแก่ เนื่องจากยังไม่พบรายงานการวิจัยเกี่ยวกับมะรุมในด้านนี้ คาดว่าเป็นการสรุปเนื่องจากมะรุมมีสารฟลาโวนอยด์สำคัญคือ รูทินและเควอเซทิน (rutin และ quercetin) สารลูทีนและกรดแคฟฟีโอลิลควินิก (lutein และ caffeoylquinic acids) ซึ่งต้านอนุมูลอิสระ ดูแลอวัยวะต่างๆ ได้แก่ จอประสาทตา ตับ และหลอดเลือดจากการเสื่อมสภาพตามอายุ การกินสารต้านอนุมูลอิสระชะลอการเสื่อมสภาพในเซลล์ร่างกาย
ฆ่าจุลินทรีย์
สารเบนซิลไทโอไซยาเนตโคไซด์และเบนซิลกลูโคซิโนเลตค้นพบในปี พ.ศ. 2507 จากมะรุมมีฤทธิ์ต้านจุลชีพ สนับสนุนการใช้น้ำคั้นจากมะรุมหยอดหูแก้ปวดหู
ปัจจุบันหลังจากค้นพบแบคทีเรียที่ทำให้เกิดโรคกระเพาะอาหาร Helicobactor pylori กำลังมีการศึกษาสารจากมะรุมในการต้านเชื้อดังกล่าว
การป้องกันมะเร็ง
สารเบนซิลไทโอไซยาเนตไกลโคไซด์ชนิดหนึ่งและสารไนอาซิไมซิน (niazimicin) จากมะรุมสามารถต้านการเกิดมะเร็งที่ถูกกระตุ้นโดยสารฟอบอลเอสเทอร์ในเซลล์มะเร็งเม็ดเลือดขาวได้
การทดลองในหนูพบว่าหนูที่ได้รับฝักมะรุมเป็นอาการเกิดโรคมะเร็งผิวหนังจากการกระตุ้นน้อยกว่ากลุ่มทดลอง โดยกลุ่มที่กินมะรุมเนื้องอกบนผิวหนังน้อยกว่ากลุ่มควบคุม
ฤทธิ์ลดไขมันและคอเลสเทอรอล
จากการทดลอง 120 วัน ให้กระต่ายกินฝักมะรุม วันละ 200 กรัมต่อกิโลกรัมน้ำหนักตัวต่อวันเทียบกับยาโลวาสแตทิน 6 มิลลิกรัมต่อกิโลกรัมน้ำหนักตัวต่อวันและให้อาหารไขมันมาก

ทั้งนี้ กลุ่มที่กินมะรุมและยามีคอเลสเทอรอลฟอสโฟไลพิด ไตรกลีเซอไรด์ VLDL LDL ปริมาณคอเลสเทอรอลต่อฟอสโฟไลพิด และ atherogenic index ต่ำลง ทั้ง 2 กลุ่มมีการสะสมไขมันในตับ หัวใจ และหลอดเลือดแดงใหญ่ (เอออร์ตา) โดย
กลุ่มควบคุมปัจจัยด้านการสะสมไขมันในอวัยวะเหล่านี้ไม่มีค่าลดลงแต่อย่างใด กลุ่มที่กินมะรุมพบการขับคอเลสเทอรอลในอุจจาระเพิ่มขึ้น ผู้วิจัยจึงสรุปว่าการกินมะรุมมีผลลดไขมันในร่างกาย
ที่ประเทศอินเดียมีการใช้ใบมะรุมลดไขมันในคนที่มีโรคอ้วนมาแต่เดิม การศึกษาการกินสารสกัดใบมะรุมในหนูที่กินอาหารไขมันสูงมีปริมาณคอเลสเทอรอลในเลือดลดลงอย่างมีนัยสำคัญเทียบกับกลุ่มควบคุม นอกจากนี้กลุ่มทดลองมีปริมาณไขมันในตับและไตลดลง
สรุปว่าการให้ใบมะรุมเพื่อลดปริมาณไขมันทางการแพทย์อินเดียสามารถวัดผลได้ในเชิงวิทยาศาสตร์จริง
ฤทธิ์ป้องกันตับ
งานวิจัยการให้สารสกัดแอลกอฮอล์ของใบมะรุมกรณีทำให้ตับหนูทดลองเกิดความเสียหายโดยไรแฟมไพซิน พบว่าสารสกัดใบมะรุมมีฤทธิ์ป้องกันตับ โดยมีผลกับระดับเอนไซม์แอสาเทตอะมิโนทรานสเฟอเรส อะลานีน
ทรานมิโนทรานสเฟอเรส อัลคาไลน์ฟอสฟาเทส และบิลิรูบินในเลือด และมีผลกับปริมาณไลพิดและไลพิดเพอร์ออกซิเดสในตับ โดยดูผลยืนยันจากการตรวจชิ้นเนื้อตับ สารสกัดใบมะรุมและซิลิมาริน (silymarin กลุ่มควบคุมบวก) มีผลช่วยการพักฟื้นของการถูกทำลายของตับจากยาเหล่านี้

มะรุม เป็นพืชสมุนไพรที่มีสรรพคุณในหลายด้าน เช่น ราก จะมีรสเผ็ด หวาน ขม แก้อาการบวม บำรุงไฟธาตุ เปลือก จะมีรสร้อน ช่วยขับลม ใบ ช่วยแก้เลือดออกตามไรฟัน แก้อักเสบ ดอก ช่วยบำรุงร่างกาย ขับปัสสาวะ ขับน้ำตา ฝัก รสหวาน แก้ไข้หรือลดไข้ เป็นต้น

สรรพคุณ :
ฝัก - ปรุงเป็นอาหารรับประทานแก้ไข้หัวลม เปลือกต้น - มีรสร้อน รับประทานเป็นยาขับลมในลำไส้ ทำให้ผายหรือเรอ คุมธาตุอ่อนๆ (ตัดต้นลมดีมาก)
ราก - มีรสเผ็ด หวานขม แก้บวม บำรุงไฟธาตุ มีคุณเสมอกับกุ่มบก

แพทย์ตามชนบท ใช้เปลือกมะรุมสดๆ ตำบุบพอแตกๆ อมไว้ข้างแก้ม แล้วรับประทานสุราจะไม่รู้สึกเมาเลย
จากประสบการณ์ เนื้อในเมล็ดมะรุม ใช้แก้ไอได้ดี ใบสดมีฤทธิ์เป็นยาระบายอ่อนๆ มีแคลเซียม วิตามินซี แร่ธาตุและสารต้านอนุมูลอิสระสูงมาก การรับประทานเนื้อในเมล็ด และใบสดเป็นประจำสามารถเพิ่มภูมิต้านทานให้ร่างกายได้
ข้อควรระวัง ในคนที่เป็นโรคเลือด G6PD ไม่ควรรับประทาน
"มะรุม" มีชื่อทางวิทยาศาสตร์ว่า Moringa oleifera Lam. วงศ์ Moringaceae เป็นพืชกำเนิดแถบใต้เชิงเขาหิมาลัย เป็นไม้ยืนต้นขนาดกลางที่ถูกปลูกไว้ในบริเวณบ้านไทยมาแต่โบราณ กินได้หลายส่วน ทั้งยอด ดอก และฝักเขียว แต่ใครๆ ก็นิยมกินฝักมากกว่าส่วนอื่นๆ ต้นมะรุมพบได้ทุกภาคในประเทศไทย ทางอีสานเรียก “ผักอีฮุม หรือผักอีฮึม” ภาคเหนือเรียก “มะค้อมก้อน” ชาวกะเหรี่ยงแถบกาญจนบุรีเรียก “กาแน้งเดิง” ส่วนชานฉานแถบแม่ฮ่องสอนเรียก “ผักเนื้อไก่” เป็นต้น
ผู้เฒ่าผู้แก่นิยมกินมะรุมในช่วงต้นหนาวเพราะเป็นฤดูกาลของฝักมะรุม หาได้ง่าย รสชาติอร่อยเพราะสดเต็มที่ มีขายตามตลาดในช่วงฤดูกาล คนที่ปลูกมะรุมไว้ในบ้านเท่านั้นจึงจะมีโอกาสลิ้มรสยอดมะรุม ใบอ่อน ช่อดอกและฝักอ่อน ช่อดอกนำไปดองเก็บไว้กินกับน้ำพริก ยอดมะรุม ใบอ่อน ช่อดอก และฝักอ่อนนำมาลวกหรือต้ทให้สุก จิ้มกับน้ำพริกปลาร้า น้ำพริกแจ่วบอง กินแนมกับลาบ ก้อย แจ่วได้ทุกอย่าง หรือจะใช้ยอดอ่อน ช่อดอกทำแกงส้มหรือแกงอ่อมก็ได้
ส่วนอื่นๆ ของโลกจะใช้ใบมะรุมประกอบอาหารเช่นเดียวกับการใช้ผักขมฝรั่ง หรือปรุงเป็นซอสข้นราดข้าวหรืออาหารแป้งอื่นๆ นอกจากนี้ ใช้ใบตากแห้งป่นเก็บไว้ได้นานโรยอาหาร เช่นเดียวกับที่ภูมิปัญญาอีสานจังหวัดสกลนครใช้ใบมะรุมแห้งปรุงเข้าเครื่อง “ผงนัว” กับสมุนไพรอื่นไว้แต่งรสอาหารมาแต่โบราณ ส่วนฝักอ่อนปรุงอาหารเหมือนถั่วแขก
คุณค่าทางอาหารของมะรุม
มะรุมเป็นพืชมหัศจรรย์ มีคุณค่าทางโภชนาการสูงสุด กล่าวถึงในคัมภีร์ใบเบิ้ลว่าเป็นพืชที่รักษาทุกโรค
ใบมะรุมมีโปรตีนสูงกว่านมสด 2 เท่า การกินใบมะรุมตามชนบทของประเทศกำลังพัฒนาและประเทศโลกที่ 3 เป็นการเพิ่มโปรตีนคุณภาพสูงราคาถูกให้กับอาหารพื้นบ้าน
นอกจากนี้ มะรุมมีธาตุอาหารปริมาณสูงเป็นพิเศษที่ช่วยป้องกันโรค นั่นคือ
วิตามินเอ บำรุงสายตามีมากกว่าแครอต 3 เท่า
วิตามินซี ช่วยป้องกันหวัด 7 เท่าของส้ม

ประเทศอินเดีย หญิงตั้งครรภ์จะกินใบมะรุมเพื่อเสริมธาตุเหล็ก แต่ที่ประเทศที่ฟิลิปปินส์และบอสวานาหญิงที่เลี้ยงลูกด้วยนมจะกินแกงจืดใบมะรุม (ภาษาฟิลิปปินส์ เรียก “มาลังเก”) เพื่อประสะน้ำนมและเพิ่มแคลเซียมให้กับน้ำนมแม่เหมือนกับคนไทย
ประโยชน์ของมะรุม
1.ใช้รักษาโรคขาดอาหารในเด็กแรกเกิดถึง 10 ขวบ และลดสถิติการเสียชีวิต พิการ และตาบอดได้เป็นอย่างดี
2.ใช้รักษาผู้ป่วยเป็นโรคเบาหวานให้อยู่ในภาวะควบคุมได้
3.รักษาโรคความดันโลหิตสูง
4.ช่วยเพิ่มและเสริมสร้างภูมิคุ้มกันให้แก่ร่างกาย ทานผลิตผลจากมะรุมในระหว่างตั้งครรภ์ เด็กที่เกิดมาจะไม่ติดเชื้อHIV นอกจากนี้ถ้ารับประทานอย่างน้อยอาทิตย์ละ 3 ครั้งยังช่วยให้คนทั่วๆไปสามารถสร้างภูมิคุ้มกันให้กับตัวเอง
5.ช่วยรักษาผู้ป่วยโรคเอดส์ให้อยู่ในภาวะควบคุมได้ การรักษาโรคเอดส์ที่ประสพผลสำเร็จในกลุ่มประเทศแอฟริกา

Has Thaksin-Hun Sen relationship turned sour?

The picture showing Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva shaking hands with his Cambodian counterpart, Mr Hun Sen, and smiling at each other would be unthinkable almost two months ago when the two government leaders appeared to be at each other’s throat.
Shortly before the February 26 Judgement Day when the Supreme Court’s Criminal Department for Holders of Political Office was to deliver its verdict on ousted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s 76 billion baht worth of frozen assets, Mr Hun Sen unleashed a seething attack on Mr Abhisit, accusing the latter of being a thief for stealing power from Thaksin. He also challenged the Thai prime minister to dissolve the parliament and hold fresh elections.
But Mr Hun Sen was a completely different person in a face-off with Mr Abhisit Sunday night during a welcome dinner hosted for leaders of participating countries at the Mekong River Commission summit in Hua Hin. The Thai prime minister smilingly shook hands with his Cambodian counterpart and wished him a happy birthday. By appearance at least, there were no open signs of any animosity between them.
“Was Mr Hun Sen sincere?” asked curious reporters when they met Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thuagsuban who made a courtesy call on Mr Hun Sen on the sideline of the Mekong summit on Sunday to wish the latter a happy birthday.
Mr Suthep said that Mr Hun Sen’s mood had changed. He also told the reporters that Mr Hun Sen had barred Thaksin from using Cambodia to attack the Abhisit government and that he looked forward to the restoration of normal relations between Thailand and Cambodia. Giving Mr Hun Sen the benefit of doubt, the Cambodian prime minister’s latest gesture and, more importantly, his pledge to deny Thaksin the use of Cambodian soil to attack the Thai government is indeed a welcome sign although it remains to be seen whether Mr Hun Sen’s words will be matched with his deeds.
A big question mark remains – that is what has made Mr Hun Sen a “changed” person from what he was over a month ago as far as his relationship with the Abhist government is concerned?
Something might have gone wrong in the relationship between Mr Hun Sen and Thaksin whom the former once described as an “eternal” friend.
By design or by coincidence, Thaksin has not visited Cambodia since his red-shirt supporters launched their latest round of anti-government protest on March 12 which has dragged on until today with no end in sight. Strategically, he should have been in Cambodia rather than hopping around from country to country such as from Dubai to Montenero, Sweden, Russia and back to Dubai like a drifter while directing the protest in Bangkok.
The loss of Cambodia as Thaksin’s launchpad to undermine the Abhisit government, if that is proven true, will represent yet another major setback for the fugitive.

The picture showing Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva shaking hands with his Cambodian counterpart, Mr Hun Sen, and smiling at each other would be unthinkable almost two months ago when the two government leaders appeared to be at each other’s throat.
Shortly before the February 26 Judgement Day when the Supreme Court’s Criminal Department for Holders of Political Office was to deliver its verdict on ousted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s 76 billion baht worth of frozen assets, Mr Hun Sen unleashed a seething attack on Mr Abhisit, accusing the latter of being a thief for stealing power from Thaksin. He also challenged the Thai prime minister to dissolve the parliament and hold fresh elections.
But Mr Hun Sen was a completely different person in a face-off with Mr Abhisit Sunday night during a welcome dinner hosted for leaders of participating countries at the Mekong River Commission summit in Hua Hin. The Thai prime minister smilingly shook hands with his Cambodian counterpart and wished him a happy birthday. By appearance at least, there were no open signs of any animosity between them.
“Was Mr Hun Sen sincere?” asked curious reporters when they met Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thuagsuban who made a courtesy call on Mr Hun Sen on the sideline of the Mekong summit on Sunday to wish the latter a happy birthday.
Mr Suthep said that Mr Hun Sen’s mood had changed. He also told the reporters that Mr Hun Sen had barred Thaksin from using Cambodia to attack the Abhisit government and that he looked forward to the restoration of normal relations between Thailand and Cambodia.
